The Girls We Used to Be: The Young Ladies Christian Fellowship

I remember being thirteen years old and so very self-conscious.

I remember turning sixteen years old and having life all figured out.

I remember becoming twenty-one and fearing nothing was working out like I planned.

These days, my friends and I write to that girl I used to be.  We encourage her not to look to rules but to hang onto her ideals.  We remind her of how short the days are and how big our God is.

And somehow, in writing to the girls we used to be, the women we now are find encouragement as well.

We call our blog the Young Ladies Christian Fellowship, but it’s made up of women of all ages—young ladies and those who love them.

It’s a haven for hearts.  A site to share journeys, not just words.  A chance to say, “What? You too?” A place to point the “good girls” back to the One Who loves them for whose they are, not what they do.  A place to delight in the God Who is too good to be true, and is true just the same.

The team of writers at YLCF is made up of thirteen women, ages nineteen to thirty-four.  We’re spread throughout England, Australia, Israel, and America.  Five are single, six are mothers, all of us share a love for the Lord and a heart for young women.

And those young women who make up our readership are even more varied demographically.  But a love of good books and of love stories keeps drawing us back together.

We spend a whole month reviewing and giving away books for our annual “March Of Books”.   But the most visited section of our website is where we collect “courtship stories” – stories of those who have given the “pen” of their lives to the Lord and seen Him write a beautiful love story.

Each story is as unique as the couple, but their very individuality is what encourages the waiting single the most.

We look at the humorous side of growing up homeschooled.  We learn together about our passions and our gifts.

We share hair care tips and we talk about beauty.  We delve into the details of each other’s lives in our annual link-ups.

We learn and we grow together, forming life-long friendships, and we pray, touching hearts for eternity.

And when we receive stories like this one, we’re inspired and humbled to know that we’ve had an impact in one young woman’s life:

“I am writing to you because your writing has changed my life. I stumbled upon YLCF on accident, looking for a natural way to care for my curly hair. At the time, I was not Christian. I believe that God has used your writing to lead me to Him. I want to thank you for inspiring me with the stories that came from your own lives and thoughts.”

So we keep sharing our lives and our Hope in words.  Trying to be a faithful mentor to those girls we used to be.

If you could write a blog post to your teenage self, what would you say?

Gretchen and her husband sell antiques and vegetables on their family farm in Washington state.  Gretchen loves dark chocolate and coffee, but when she writes, she feels God’s pleasure.  In addition to being founding editor of the Young Ladies Christian Fellowship (where your guest posts to your former teenage self are welcome!), Gretchen blogs at The Little Pink House in between raising three curly-headed little ones.

Amazima means “Truth”

Extraordinary things happen when we open ourselves up to God’s calling on our lives.

Today I’d like to highlight a powerful ministry founded by a willing vessel who has devoted her life in service to an extraordinary God.

When Katie Davis traveled to Uganda in 2007 to serve out a ten-month commitment to teach kindergartners, little did she know that the seeds she sowed then would grow and flourish into an international ministry. That short-term trip turned into a lifetime commitment of bettering and serving the people and culture she’s fallen in love with.

Amazima Ministries, International (which Katie founded at age nineteen) ”seeks to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the people of Uganda who need it most” through child sponsorship, feeding programs, and self-sustaining vocational programs.

In Katie’s own words:

People tell me I am brave. People tell me I am strong. People tell me good job. Well here is the truth of it. I am really not that brave, I am not really that strong, and I am not doing anything spectacular. I am just doing what God called me to do as a follower of Him. Feed His sheep, do unto the least of His people.”

Katie has said that working in a Third World country is like trying to empty the ocean with an eyedropper. When she gets a half a cup full of water, it rains.

To feed one hungry child must seem minimal when you consider the vastness of the problem of world hunger. But to that one hungry child, it means everything. As Katie says, she’s not here to change the world. She’s just here to love.

But Amazima Ministries is changing the world.

Watch this video to see Katie’s work in action.

To read even more of Katie’s amazing story, visit her blog or purchase her book. It just might change your life, too.

And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ Matthew 25:40 NKJV

Learning Together at Home: JoinTitus 2 University!

I’m so thrilled to be sharing here in this new online community for ladies! What a joy when sistren walk together in unity; can I hear an “amen?”

Denise and I had the chance to talk a bit recently and she thought the readers here might like to know about a project I launched last month.  Back in December, as I was studying and seeking the Lord about what exactly He wanted me to focus on as a writer and blogger and sojourner along the path of life, I ran across these old familiar verses in Titus 2:3-4…

“Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.”

And I had one of those “aha!” moments.  Surely, here we have an outline for a great curriculum, if you will—a course of study we can’t go wrong with.  Many ladies lament the fact that there are no “older women” nearby offering to spend time with them—most are busy with their own lives, or feel unable or unqualified to step into the scary-looking shoes of the “older woman” having not been mentored themselves.  Others find that, as young mamas with little ones and carpool and soccer and chess and … and … and …

They are the ones with no discretionary time, and wish so much for a way to study and learn “together” without leaving home.

Sounded like the perfect opportunity for a whole new type of ministry! And so, Titus 2 University was born.

Since there are seven specific areas mentioned here, this is a nine-month “university.”  We begin with a general overview of these topics and talk about what it means to be a woman who follows the Lord.  Then for the next seven months, we’ll focus on each subject above in turn.

And here’s the really fun thing, which makes me giddy every time I think about it … some very precious “sistren” have agreed to join us!  We will cover loving our husbands with Cindy Rushton; loving our children with Sally Clarkson; being sensible with Crystal Paine; being pure with Chelsea Terwilliger; working at home with SarahMae; being kind with Emily Freeman, and being subject to our own husbands with Joy Forney!  And there are several more fabulous interviewees on the list.

You can get all the details and you can read more about it here.

Right now we have ladies from all over the country involved– and a few international friends, too! We’d love to have you join us!  If you decide to join us from Sisters in Bloom, send me an email to let me know.  I’ll make your last month of a monthly subscription free, or take $5 off the full-session purchase price. Hope to meet you soon!

Misty Krasawski is the overly-blessed mom of eight children whom she homeschools in sunshine-y Florida. She has been clinging ferociously to the hand of her Lord since she was knee-high to a grasshopper, homeschooling for the past thirteen years, and has eighteen more years ahead of her with the children who are glad she will have done most of her experimenting on those who went before. Her wonderful husband Rob has much treasure laid up for him in heaven for having been called to such a daunting task.
